Buying a fish, need some advice/help ( 3 questions in one)?

ok, I was planning on buying possibly 3 comets, how big should my tank be for this?

I heard that you need a filter for your tank, since I don't have a lot of money [ :( ] how much does a standard one go for?

and how do they attach onto your tank?

If you have any other fish advice, please feel free to tell.

THANKS!Buying a fish, need some advice/help ( 3 questions in one)?
Goldfish grow very big, and some can grow up to 6'; ! Goldfish neeed at least a 20 gallon aquarium, preferably 40 or more. ALL FISH NEED FILTERS! No filter = DEAD FISH! This is a proven fact.

Filters are not at all expensive. A very high quality one (Marineland Bio-Wheel) goes for about $25 for a model that filters up to a 20 gallon tank. Here is a link:http://www.amazon.com/Marineland-Penguin鈥?/a>

Most filters hang off the rear of the tank, on a flat vertical surface, but they won't work on a bowl. That is why a bowl is a death trap for fish. No fish can be kept in a bowl! It is essential that you get a rectangular or hexagon shaped aquarium of no less than 20 gallons if you want to keep a healthy fish. A goldfish kept in a bowl, or without a filter will live at most 3 months.

In comparison, a well-kept goldfish with a proper home will live up to 25 YEARS!

If you don't have enough money, I'd recommend that you buy tropical fish, which can be kept in as small as a 5 gallon aquarium.

Good Luck!Buying a fish, need some advice/help ( 3 questions in one)?
The standard approximation is 20 gallons for the first goldfish, 10 for each goldfish after that. So just starting out, you need 40 gallons (150 liters). However, commons/fancies are a little bit bigger than fancies, so you might want to go with 50 or 55 gallons instead (about 200 liters).

Filters come in different sizes to match the size of the tank they're designed for. Most filters fall between $20-$50. The size tank you're looking is priced at around $200-$500, depending on if you're buying accessories, stands, and the size of the tank.

Goldfish are difficult first-time fish, especially if you're trying to save money. If you really like them, go ahead and get them; you can get decent set-ups cheap off of craigslist, and in used markets. A local fish store might be willing to cut you a deal.

However, it might be easier to go with a tank that's 10, 15, or 20 gallons (appx. 40, 60, or 75 liters), where, for the same price as just the large tanks listed above, you can get the complete set-up, fish, tank, accessories, and all.

Comet fish can get up to 12 inches so for 3 you would need at least a 36 gallon tank. You could look on ebay, craigslist, the classifieds, or the pet store. For people selling fish tank kits. The kits would come with everything you would need outside of the fish, decorations, and food. ( some come with food but only enough to last about 3 days)

I was just at pet-land yesterday and they had a 29 gallon tank kit for $30.00.

You don't have to get common goldfish they have others that are really pretty and small enough to keep in a smaller aquarium.

Keep the rule of thumb in your head. 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water.

Yes your tank should have a filter. It keeps the tank cleaner. Any filter you would buy would have instructions that come with it.
Nate,

no filter = dead fish

ISN'T a proven fact.

I had a fish in a bowl who got stuck under rocks (idk how) and tried to get out cutting himself then died, not because of no filter.

Comets can get to be 12 - 16'; people say, but I have never seen one that big. Goldfish grow as big as their surroundings. Yes, you either have to really clean that tank or bowl every day or get a filter. Filters are MUCH easier. I am not sure how hey attach to the tank, because my tank has a filter on the hood of the tank.

ask your pet store for my help, and look for tanks in craigslist, ebay, pet store, yard sales (maybe) ect.
Go to your local pet store, the workers are great with answering your fish questions. From experience, yes, you do need a filter to help keep the tank clean,I just purchased a 30-60 tank filter from petco,it was on sale for $39.99 regular price was $59.99.

Too many goldfish will keep you busy with alot of water changes, they are cute but very nasty.
you would need about 60 gal(30gal for one +10 every other) you need to give them a varied diet. Flakes, sinking pellets and Krill, Pacific plankton, brine shrimp, blood worms. you could can also feed them pieces of apples, oranges, strawberry, shrimp, lobster, lettuce, cucumber, etc,you would also need a bubblier. Make sure to make the tank look as natural as possible rocks that look real, real hardy plants or plastic plants. all of this will give you a big healthy happy goldfish
Both common and comets grow to about 10-12 inches on average, some larger. You would need at the very least, a 55 gallon tank, and need to over filter the tank....meaning, I would get a hob filter(hang on the back) and a canister filter. And yes, you do need a filter. All fish should have a filter on their tank, even bettas.

The largest Penguin brand hob filter will run about 30-40.00, and a canister, the magnums are probably the cheapest, about 40-60.00 for that one. The hobs hang on the back of the tank, right on the glass. The canister, depends on the brand, some sit on the floor and have 2 tubes that run up to the tank glass and suction cup on, or the Magnum hangs on the side of the tank as well.

If you can't go with that large of a tank, consider one of the fancy varieties of goldfish. They'll grow large as well, but due to their body shape, you can usually get away with a 30 gallon tank as a minimum for the fish's life time for one. Depending on the fancy type, they'll grow anywhere from 6-8 inches on average, some up to 12 inches. And, they'll also need a filter as mentioned.

Look online, craiglist or lsn network for a used tank if you need one. A lot of them are people that got quickly disinterested in the fish hobby, mostly from not doing their research before jumping in. You can usually get great deals on fairly new tanks and all the accessories-including the filters. Some even including the fish :)

Good luck!

.
well i don't know about comets but the common goldfish still needs a filter, filters from wal-mart are about 15, 20 bucks and it depands on how many gold fish you would get but a 10 gallon ttank would fit about 3-5 fish a 20 gallon on the other hand could fit about 5-8 fish
3 comets/comons will need a 90 gallon tank with a big powerful filter
