So I'm off to BMT July 21st. My asvab scores are: AFQT 63, mechanical 81, admin 55, general 72, electronic 59.
I'm going 6 years active duty, with mechanical aptitude area. Jobs I'm primarily interested in so far are: Aerospace propulsion, fire protection, air traffic controller, and aerospace maintenance. Can anyone fill me in on anything I should know/do that maybe I don't know. Maybe some good jobs that I might qualify for? I'm just worried about not being able to get a job I'm interested in. So can someone just give me some good guidance, it would be greatly appreciated. Don't criticize like some others have done.Need air force advice!!! HELP!!?
I did the same thing you did (6 years in mech area.) When I got to basic they let me pick 8 jobs that I thought I would like and I wound up getting my 3rd choice. It's kind of a crap-shoot. Just don't put anything down related to nukes or missles - you will wind up at a base out in the middle of NOWHERE and your choices for bases will be VERY limited. Aerospace maintenance means you will be a crew cheif. I was an F-15 crew cheif, went to tech school, was active duty for 4 months and recieved a humanitarian assignment due to my mother being terminally ill. I was force to cross train into Admin since they didn't have F-15's in WA. I have to admit it was fun being a crew cheif, but the hours are really unpredictable and it's a fast burn out job. It's highly repetative and once you know how to do all the basic inspections and repairs it gets kind of boring. I don't know if I would have re-enlisted if I was still a crew cheif.Need air force advice!!! HELP!!?
Go helicopter maintenance!! I am in aerospace propulsion and i love it, but alot of people don't you get decent TDY's out of this field if on the flightline. Aerospace maintenance sucks, it's a crew chief and they get shafted alot but have some sweet TDY's if you are on the flightline! Air Traffic controller (ATC) is a high stress job but you will make good money when you get out. I would love to be an ATC but its just not for me for right now. You can also get into metals technology if you like to wield and whatnot, or you can do sheet metal work. there is egress where you work on ejection seats. Fuels where you work on fuel tanks on and off aircraft. PMEL where you calibrate precision measuring tools. it's up to you and what you want to do!!
If you want a challenging job that will also train you for a civilian job then go with air traffic control. Some people try to do it in the USAF just to get the free training then make more money as a civilian.
Personally I love the USAF. I'm enlisted (4yrs so far, enlisted for 6) and I'm a 2W1X1and I love it. I'm a mechanic/electrician/ weapons loader for fighter jets.
Air traffic control is no joke. It's less mechanical and more multitasking/ memory. It's hard!
If you want a mechanic's job then do what I do or be a crew chief.
Good luck!
What ever you decide, make sure you get an guaranteed job otherwise they can give you whatever job they want, instead of you choosing. I know plenty of people who were told they could choose and didnt have the choice and got screwed. i went in with guaranteed job when i went to meps.
